The year 2015 is not the best year for all the guys who are looking for the special girls fun in Shanghai. In 2014 the central government already successfully destroyed the mongerer paradise in Dongguan, but last year the main focus of the official anti crime activities has been corruption, but this year the focus changed to prostitution and gambling, and unfortunatelly also internet prostitution, so we are sure this year many escort agencies, forum pages and girls directories will be blocked in China or simply closed. The last years Shanghai keeped the paradise island with many sauna clubs, massage parlors and a still very open sex scene, but end of April the local police in Shanghai got the order for a 6 month concerted action project against prostitution in town with a special focus on internet prostitution.

The risk to get chatched in a police raid

Even you read about raids no more often, the risk is still very low. Every day there will be thousands of clubs and saunas service more than 100.000 customers and there will not get more than 5 customers a month really get in trouble because of prostitution cases, so getting insured in the taxi on the way to the sauna is nearly same risky than getting caught there, so basically no need to worry, but you should know about the risk and you should also know, how to solve the problem, if you will be involved in a raid.

What is the penality for a prostitution case in China?

The Chinese law is more tolerant for the girls and their customers and very strict for the managers and the people who organize and run the business. Even the waiters in a sauna can get a sentence to prison for 2 years!

  • The girls first and second time will be sentence to prison for 10 to 20 days, but caught a 3rd time will be punished with 2 years prison already
  • A customer who would be caught "with trousers down" will be also send to prison for 10 to 20 days. Unfortunately, for foreigners it will normally combined with cancellation of the visa and a 3 to 5 year "block" on your visa report, so for several years you have no chance to come back to China
  • The managers are the ones who really will get in trouble. Here a 5 to 12 years sentence to prision is normal, combined with trafficking, still death penality is possible

How a police rate will go on

In a normal rate at least 15 to 20 police guys will be involved, and you can be sure, they know exactly what they are looking for. They will arrive with some busses and than quickly enter the venue and "clean" room by room, so as more "barrier" will be between you and the entry, as better your chance to "escape". Mostly they do not care too much about customers who "leave", but you never can be sure. The managers will have the biggest problem, if they would be caught, so follow their advise is never a bad decision!

What to do, if the worst case happened?

Even it is quite unlikely, you still should be prepared for this very unlikely case. So if you ever get "caught" by the police in a situation, that could get come out as an prostitution case, follow some simply rules, and you often can avoid a lot of upcoming problems you can cause unintentionally.

  • If there is no evidence already, NEVER EVER confirm any "naughty" service. For example it`s impossible to prove, if you got a handjob (and be sure the girl will never confirm). Even the police tell you, they will NOT make any problem, if you confirm, they will! They are free to lie to you!
  • NEVER play the "arrogant" westerner. In this situation you are definitly not the "winner" and the police will not like guys who act like the police can not get them trouble! Keep in mind, even the son of Jacky Chan has been prisoned!
  • Even a "payment" often is the solution, don`t offer that too obvious. Better act like you are very sorry and guilty and want to pay your fine, so you can ask how much the fine you need to pay. So they could accept your money without loose the face (and often they are happy to avoid the "paper war" and not struggle around with the "foreigner problem").

Keep cool and don`t get in panic, often there will be a chance to get out of this trouble, just because they are trying to find the managers and not waste their time with customers or because your "fine" attract them or their just want to "scare" the scene and "blow it away", but not to bring too much trouble to girls and customers.

How to Have More Secure Fun

There are many "rumors" how to find best place or best time to avoid stumble into a police raid, but honestly there is no way to avoid it totally, but the chance to win in a lottery is higher than getting caught in a raid here in Shanghai, but even that sometimes people win the million somewhere. But just avoid the more risky activities can avoid 99% of the risk to get problems.

Our Rating for the Safety of your Mongering

Very Safe Activity

*  *  *  *  *

Very Risky Activity

 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Independent Escorts              *  *  *  *  *

Independent girls who will come to your room will be a safe entertainment. Till now the hotels don`t care who will come or go, and even if the girl would be "raided", there is no evidence for her "business", and in your room she even could be your lover or girlfriend. As long as their is no money involved, it is not a problem to sleep with a stranger, and no one will know about your arrangement finally!

Bar Pickup                            *  *  *  *  *

A pickup also on the save side. As long as you both not talk about a money arrangement, no one can prove any illegal activities. But better use the time in taxi to know name, age and so on of your "new girlfriend" and vice versa, because in worst case they would ask you or the girl.

KTV Pickup                            *  *  *  *  *

Till now KTVs not have got really big problems, because in the Klub there will not happen any obviously illegal prostitution, and if you take her home, she could be your Girlfriend already. So this kind of naughty entertainment mostly is save fun.

Upscaled Sauna Club           *  *  *  *

The big sauna clubs will be informed, if the risk for a rate comes up and close than. They also have several hidden doors to block away the police from the "delicate" areas, so there is a big chance, that you will not get problems, if "join" a raid.

Escort Agency Girls              *  *  *

Agencies are a little bit more dangerous than independent girls, because if the manager there will be caught, they also can raid the current customers places regarding to his current "data base"

Small Sauna Club                *  *

The risk to get caught in a small sauna club is higher, because first they can pay less for "information", second they will not have so professional hidden areas like the big places, so here the risk is often comparable with a massage Shop

Happy Ending Massage     *  *

The happy ending massage shops have one advantage. Because there will be no sex service, there will also be no used condoms, so no proof that something naughty happened, as long as all keep quiet. But this shops will be raided very often.

Incall / QQ-Girls                     *

QQ girls which will invite you to visit them in your appartment have never been a good choice. They are located in normal compounds, and the neighbors mostly not like this business around, so they often call the police to raid this appartments

Barbershops                         *

The risk to get caught in a Barbershop is nearly the highest, because it`s obviously what they offer, no way to block or hide in case of a raid and not enough reveniew to pay for a very good protection, so better avoid it.

    * Also posted on the 'Barbershop' section *

I moved into a place near 栖霞路 (Qixialu) back in February 2016 and upon walking down the road there would always see around five shops there with girls outside. The sight was tempting but I had a girlfriend at the time.

This Summer though I had no girlfriend and paid for an independent escort. Despite paying around 1300元 she was awful really. Anyway back in September I saw one of these girls at 栖霞路 and thought well why not. She looked hot and took me to a completely different building where there was a bed in a small room and offered a full service for 300元. She was friendly, hot, and a good fuck too. I took her for around 10 minutes, so all in all just 15 minutes.

On 3rd October I went back, this time paying 250元 for another full service with another girl. Again pretty attractive and I was satisfied.

Last night (16th October) I went back and the entire road has been raided. AFAIK there five shops there, four on the main road and one to the side. Three of the shops now have no windows nor over-door shops signs. They have been completely stripped out bare. I even saw lots of young men peering into them quickly and then scurrying off... I am not sure when this happened, but it was clearly between 3rd and 16th October, probably towards the latter date...

I cannot imagine those places returning, and neither will the girls. Both girls I was with where not from Shanghai. It is a shame. The girls were hot and offered a good service. Most importantly for me it was cheap. I would rather pay 300元 for one girl at 15 minutes, then 1000元 for a 60 minute section with one girl. Furthermore because they did the deed in completely different buildings (it wasn't 'upstairs') I thought it was pretty safe.

I got the feeling that 栖霞路 had had these shops for years. But I think that is the end of them. In fact Pudong as a whole has very, very few of these shops now. I reckon Hongkou will follow suit soon.

Anyone got any more information about this situation? I guess I will need to find a new place...

    Hi Steven,

I have recently made contact with one of the saunas that you have listed. Now after reading the comments below I am a little hesitant to go to this place. Do you have any update by chance?

So does this mean that the Red House Sauna listed on your site is not a safe place for visit right now?

unfortunately not, as far as our contact know, they still in the "decision finding process" who will be allowed to reopen (which one of the sauna clubs, for the massage shops we don`t know if even one will get a "permission for that.

Sorry, but seems we still need to wait,

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Thursday, 21 April 2016 22:10)

@ All: Avoid Jing An and Zha Bei District

There is a new district leader who is responsible for the Jing An and Zha Bei District. He set up a clear rule, that all sauna clubs and handjob massage places have to close now.
There is a forecast, that they will only allow 2 or 3 of them to reopen after some time.
Actually the Shu Yi Quan Sauna in No.825 yan an zhong lu, near shan xi lu simply ignored the order and went on with business as usual till last Friday. They got "hot raided" (police raid without warning, where customers and girls are in the place) and more than 30 to 40 people have been arrested and not released yet.
It`s obviously that there is "game of power" going on and that will be very dangerous for a the western guys who will be accidentally end up between the parties.
We strictly recommend till we will get an update - to avoid any kind of naughty activities except perhaps an pickup or escort (where you finally meet a girl for sex).
One night stands are not illegal, so as long as both of you (the girl and the customer) not give in to a money deal, nothing will happen. Different to a sauna or massage place raid, where they can simply set all in the same level f the highest amount, so better stay safe or drive a little bit more far in more secure areas.

Have fun, keep safe (with us) and enjoy your stay,

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Tuesday, 05 April 2016 22:26)

Your question is answered just above! Check the security rating. It`s for sure more risky to be in a happy ending massage than in a sauna. Simply because a sauna will make millions of US Dollar every year, so they are also able to pay very good for protection, while a happy ending massage is a small business, so they will have a much lower protection budget.
There is nearly no sauna raid without a pre - warning in Shanghai, but there is nearly never a pre - warning for a handjob massage shop raid.

For the case you will be involved, here our tip:
If you got caught there, than it will not have consequences, if you and the girl both not give in that there has been more than a massage. And the girl is "trained" for that, so the risky point is the customer here.
I know about a case where the police told the customer that he has to expect no problems when he tell them the truth, so he give in that he got a handjob and some hours later he end up in the local prison - together with the stuff of the shop.

But if security is a point, than for sure visit this shops is not a recommendation I would give you.

Have a good time and a lot of fun,

Have you heard about raids in massage place where they provide massage + HJ? Do you think the risk is the same or lower than in sauna where they provide sex services?

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Friday, 01 April 2016 20:55)

in fact it sounds more easy than it finally is. I had an experience with a client last year in the Hui Hong sauna. One of the only saunas I have been where they strictly not allow any mobile phone behind the looker room. And finally we have to leave, because the customer was not willing to accept that he is not reachable for some hours.
And I would guess that is a problem also for Chinese clients. So a sauna can only be very serious on that topic, if they don`t need to care if they loose a significant number ob clients. At least I guess that is the reason why in nearly no other place I got problems to walk around with my ipad mini - which I use for wechat translation, but also for check rates and so on - but which also easily can be used for videoshooting.
So I would guess as long as the "no mobile rule" not really works, the hidden shooting risk still exist.

    RobSH (Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:40)

I've wondered how the hidden can works when you get undressed and change into Sauna clothes. Seems easy to prevent that problem.

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Friday, 18 March 2016 23:39)

Some guys already discussing if the whether get better or not, if the closing of saunas is just normal or a sign for some significant changes, so here my view of the actual situation:

It`s not really what we call Windy, that is not what would describe the actual situation. It`s more like the general whether got more windy.
Wechat for example closed many sauna or prostitution related accounts, normally recognized on their postings, that`s reason why now many of this managers delete their timeline.
Some important "heads" in the local government have been changed, so that the network structure got some changes too, so some needed to close because of that, others got a chance to keep open or to open new.
But over all the business went another level down in the underground and mostly done and promoted a little bit less "visible" than before. For example while some sauna clubs in the past charge a little bit higher for guys without appointment, they now refuse this guys to enter the sauna, just hoping that the undercover journalist (which is actually the worst case) has a little bit less chance to enter the club. On the other side they need clients, so they can never reduce this risk to "0" without close.
The journalist is so dangerous, because with this "strategy" the central government in Beijing blow away the Dong Guan Redlight paradise. Journalists with hidden cameras got the proof, than a 30 min TV feature informed whole Chine about the "dirty things" going on over there and 24 hours later the police show up to "clean" the city. Since that in Dongguan is nearly nothing any more.
So from my point of view nothing that will change back to normal soon er even anytime, that seems to be the new "normal" level.
So still everything everywhere available, only a little bit more harder to find - but for that we are here ;-)

Have fun as long the party is going on,

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Wednesday, 13 January 2016 00:30)

It seems the weather got better now. Most of the sauna clubs we are in touch with even in Min Hang will open again today, so that is a clear sign, that they got informed the police "finished" their task" and will not trouble around any more.
So there is never a guarantee, but from our view we are on the way back to the normal level in Shanghai.

    Have fun,

Can you update me about the risk? I will be at SH from 13/1 till 16/1

  • #24

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Saturday, 09 January 2016 16:37)

At the moment there is a credible warning about several sauna raids starting from today and last at least 2 to 3 days.
The "center" of the crackdown will be the Min Hang district, but it will also influence Xu Hui and probably other areas of Puxi.
Several of the saunas will close this days, so better check, if you plan to go there.
But I would recommend to skip your sauna visit this days, if this will be an option for you ;-) The risk to get caught with "trousers down" will be significant higher that days.
That doesn`t mean it`s a big risk, but for sure there will be several police raids this days and there is a chance that this will also happen in one of the clubs who took the risk to stay open.
There are no real "numbers" to calculate your risk, but let`s say like that: if normally there is a risk of 1:1 000 000 to be the one who got caught, this days it will be perhaps 1:50 000! That means still from all western guys who go over this days in whole city only one will be in this trouble, but I still would not recommend to go there before the storm has been calmed down!
For sure avoid ALL barbershops and massage shops this days, that will be even much more risky!
I would recommend the hotel "delivery service" or bar pickup, which will not be influenced by the wind. In a pickup bar raid, they only can check the visa of the girls, but there is nothing "serious" going on there, so no risk for the customer ;-) But better take your passport with you (or a copy of the personal page and visa page will also work), because you will be asked for that and it`s getting complicate, if you can not provide that.
Regarding to the law, a foreigner need to carry his passport with him always in China. There is still the way to go to your hotel "accompanied" by the police - I had this case one time in a girls bar already - but that could be also not so funny, if you want to be less "flashy" in your hotel ;-)
So take your passport and go out for pick your "girl" up or use the "delivery service" by escorts, than you will be safe, so no need for getting a monk that weekend, even you better avoid the shops which could get bothered by a raid.

    Stay safe and have fun,

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Wednesday, 02 December 2015 13:31)

    Windy this days...

actually the weather has become very bad in town this days, especially in Xu Hui and Min Hang area. Last Friday the local TV station published details about a sauna and outcall police raid in Xu Jia Hui, where also customers, many girls and several sauna manager and "mamasans" have been involved.
So the raids reached a new level, because normally in Shanghai a raid will be combined with a pre-note, so that the police should arrive at empty places, but not this time.
So for example Red House decided to close for one week and also last weekend several sauna clubs in the south east not open.
So actually I would recommend to check, if your sauna is in business before you go there.

    Nevertheless, have fun...

  • #22

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Wednesday, 02 December 2015 13:24)

no one of us hear about that rumor yet, and I guess if there would be something like an official "plan" for that, than the sauna managers would have got catched up by that message, because it would destroy their current life status.
And the situation in Dong Guan was also a "political case". As I understood, the leaders in Dong Guan supported Bo Xi Lai a little bit too long, so when his "star fall down", the Beijing leaders took the chance to show to them where the real power is located now!
But there is for sure a high risk that the paradise here will end one day. This year the government proclaimed a campaign for a "clean internet" and advised all police stations in China to concentrate on online prostitution and gambling for 6 month.
Actually more than 50.000 pages have been closed already and also more than 20.000 people have been arrested in this context.
By the way, that`s the reason why we blocked our page for Chinese visitors in March when we have been informed about that. Even only the technical admin of a Chinese sauna forum has already received a 5 years prison sentence for that, so we decided to go in the underground and hope the storm will not hit us.

Let`s hope the sauna paradise will hold longer than 2016,

    Dear Shanghai Nightlife Guide,

A Chinese friend of mine says that there are political plans to blow away the majority of sauna business in Shanghai in 2016 like having done before in Dongguan. That would be a disaster.

Have you heard something like that? Thanks.

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Wednesday, 28 October 2015 06:15)

It`s not like actually it`s windy or not... this month there are always "local" wind gusts in every part of the city. Mostly with a short notice to the locations, but the police is not lazy this days.
But nothing to do with some general "windy weather" in Shanghai. Just the "normal" situation this year as far as we have been informed.

    Have fun out there,

  • #16

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Monday, 10 August 2015 14:24)

I often get asked, how big is the risk to get catched in a sauna, so here is a answer that could perhaps be helpful for you to get yourself a little bit more clear.

Even it is hard to say how big the risk is, let`s check the statistic:
there are at least two thousand saunas in Shanghai... this year they raided one in 6 month in running business.. let`s say they do the same in the second half of the year again, so 2 rates a year... every sauna is opened 355 days a year, each day 13 hours, you are there 2 hours... so if you go to a sauna 2 times a month, so all together 24 times a year, than the risk is exactly 0,000052% or around 1 to 5,2 million... Overall not too big...

But seriously, it is not so dangerous that I would be able to control my "motivation" that want me to bring there.

But another point is, that the weather in Shanghai is not the same over the whole city. For example from my view Pudong is never sunshine, I would not go there, simply because nearly all sauna manager tell me, they would never work in Pudong, because the police there much more strict and because of that much more dangerous.
And the wind now comes up especially in Xu Hui area, in Min hang there is great sunshine this days, same than in Jing An (where for example Kang Ding is located). So check the local weather also should be a good way to reduce the risk even more.

So from my view no need to stay at home,

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Sunday, 26 July 2015 01:16)

The "wind" in the Xu Hui district last week has come over from a "thunderstorm" where the the flash is stamped into a running sauna club in West Long Hua Road!

They have been raided without any forewarning and several girls and customers went to prison.

We still try to find out, if also foreigners have been catched "with trousers down", but till now no detailed report from our "LE-contact". But a raid without a pre announcement is very unusual for Shanghai, so we all should keep in mind, that nothing is 100% safe, even not here in Shanghai.

Shanghai Nightlife Guide (Friday, 17 July 2015 01:27)

This week it is getting very windy in the area around the Red House sauna, so they decided to close for one week till the sun come back. Also the Ming Hui Sauna get an advice not to act to "open" for some days, so I would recommend not to party around there. Ming Hui, City Center and Kang Ding that week no wind, so better party there.

    have fun,

Day before yesterday first time for month Judy`s bar has got visitors from the "cop department" and they checked passports and visa there.
So just a reminder: The Chinese law require, that you have your passport with you ALL THE TIME! Mostly they accept also a copy (including a copy of the visa page), but go out without passport and any copy can follow up to the situation, that you will arrive in your hotel guarded by two uniformed cops who will accompany to your room where you can get your passport to show them - nothing you really will be interested in, I guess.
So my advice: take a passport copy, if you go out ;-)

    Nevertheless, have fun,

The weekend has been nearly without any disturbing action. All sauna clubs we monitor have been back to normal business, but there is still every week at least one sauna which will be closed, just to avoid getting closed.
But there is still no reason to be afraid, till now the sauna club "pre-warning" still works, so if they are open, feel free to party there.
Last week also the Long Feng forum, Shanghai`s biggest forum for sauna, massage, KTVs and QQ girls has been finally closed and their is a rumor, that the owner has been catched by the police, so the storm in the web is still going on.

Wish us luck guys, that the windless alcove where we used to hide now will not be blown away.

Tonight also all sauna clubs on our page in normal business and no raid expected, but we have been told, that the last 3 weeks all over Shanghai every day at least one sauna has been raided and closed. So that means even the storm has not reached "our area", there is still something going on now.
Also the most popular and biggest webpage for sauna and KTV clubs in Shanghai, the "longfeng-Forum" has been finally closed this days, because the owner decided, that it would be too dangerous to forward on with his business.
So my recommendation for this days is to avoid massage- and Barbershops and prefer the more secure sauna clubs instead of the small cheap ones (which have a much higher risk for getting rated).

    Have fun and keep secure,

Yesterday all saunas we scan regulary have been back to normal, Manhattan and Judy`s also in normal business, but closed earlier, because currently less customers, so many girls leave early. Also the massage shops in Hong Song Area have been in normal operation yesterday night, so not very windy this days.
